Daniel Glaser: Public engagement
ICA Scientist in Residence
In 2002 I was appointed Scientist in Residence at the Institute of
Contemporary Arts (ICA) in London. As far as we know this was the first
appointment of its kind. Of course there have been artists in residence
in labs and companies for a while. OED
has references for residence going
back to the 1950s, and sums the purpose up nicely as "teaching his
craft or influencing communal life".
Over the year I collaboratively organised a wide variety of events
including a dance
workshop, a web-based experiment and half a dozen panel
discussions. I also helped to set up the ICA Cafe Scientifique which
you can read more about here. There's also
more backgound on the media page.
Projects
I enjoyed being on the judging panel of this year's Aventis Prizes
for Science Books.
I organised and chaired a binational seminar on Scientific Ethics for
in Holland: Seminar
NWO-British Council.

As a chair
In addition to the ICA and cafesci, I have acted as a facilitator and
chair of a bunch of events, usually with some kind of
science/non-science jag:
